Finding Strength in Community: The Benefits of Online Recovery Groups

Online Recovery Groups and Communities

Let’s not beat around the bush, in the early days, recovery from addiction feels incredibly daunting. However, today I’d like to share a tip on how you can make your journey easier.

As someone who is walking the path of recovery myself everyday, I can vouch for the transformative power of a supportive community.

Whether this be in the form of a 12-Step meeting, SMART meeting or a mutual support group these communities or groups provide a safe and understanding space where you get the opportunity to connect, share experiences, and find unity in your journey towards sobriety and wellness.

In my experience being part of a recovery-focused community makes all the difference in maintaining long-term sobriety and building a healthy, fulfilling life over white knuckling it and struggling at each twist and turn in the road.

Why Community Matters

I’ll let you into a not-so-well-kept secret; unlike active addiction, recovery doesn’t have to be a solo endeavour! In fact, it's so much more enjoyable as a collective effort.

In my experience, by surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals who understand the challenges you’re likely to face, who have navigated similar challenges and conquered them you create a network that can help guide you, keep you accountable, and motivated too.

In a community, you find acceptance, empathy, and encouragement – all essential ingredients for fulfilling and sustained recovery.

The Benefits of Community Support

  • Shared Understanding: There's a shared understanding of the struggles and triumphs that come with overcoming addiction that others just can't comprehend. In a recovery-oriented community you get the sense of camaraderie that will help you feel less alone and reinforces the belief that long-term, rewarding recovery is possible, even for you.

  • Accountability: Something that I have found to be essential in achieving any sort of goal is accountability, and being part of a community provides you with accountability for your actions and commitments. Whether it's attending meetings, practising self-care, or reaching out for help when needed, knowing that others are rooting for you can be an incredibly powerful motivator.

  • Learning and Growth:  Through sharing experiences, suggestions, and listening to others' stories, you have the opportunity to gain valuable insights and perspectives that will help you on your ongoing recovery journey.

  • Supportive Environment: One of the things that kept me in active addiction for so long was the fear that I was different and a failure. In the right recovery-oriented community I found an environment where I was able to be my authentic self without fear of judgement or stigma and this sense of belonging nurtures trust and openness which also allows healthy and meaningful connections to form. Just imagine what that would do for you and your recovery…

Where to Find A Recovery Community

Just like everything else these days there are many different options out there for a person in recovery. You’ve got the traditional 12-Step meetings, SMART, secular, non-secular, mutual support and many others and if you haven’t already got it I have collated a list of 50+ places you can look which you can get here.

I am a great believer in the statement, ‘each to their own’, especially when it comes to finding a recovery community, so I will also strongly suggest that you do find one… and if the first one you try doesn’t feel like a good fit, keep on trying!

Addiction Thrives in Isolation, Recovery Thrives in Community.

I know I wouldn’t be without my community. They accept me as I am, they inspire me with their recovery, they spark awareness by sharing their thoughts and experience, they encourage me to keep growing, they listen to me without judging me, they help me laugh at myself when the self-obsession starts to take over and they help me stay grounded.

There is something very empowering in knowing that you are not alone on this journey.

Something I hear often from my clients is that they ‘struggle’ to ‘get along’ with the more traditional meetings for an array of reasons, which is why I have created an online meeting, and community that embraces all paths of recovery and welcomes anyone in recovery.
