What is Recovery Coaching?

Recovery coaching is a lifeline for those on the courageous journey to overcome challenges and addiction. Think of me as a dedicated partner on this transformative journey. My primary mission? To empower you as you take charge of your recovery journey. Through the guidance offered by recovery coaching, you'll rediscover your inner resilience, regain control over your life, and uncover a future brimming with hope.

Imagine a life where physical and emotional sobriety isn't just a dream but your reality. Recovery coaching is your beacon of support, helping you rebuild relationships, find your purpose, nurture self-worth, and experience a profound sense of well-being. It's not just about recovery; it's about rediscovering the best version of yourself.

  • What’s the difference between a recovery coach and a sponsor?
A recovery coach is a professional who provides guidance and support to help you overcome addiction and navigate your recovery journey to create a balanced life by offering personalised strategies and tools. A sponsor, on the other hand, is usually someone from a 12-step program who shares their experience, strength, and hope with you and will guide you through the steps. While both offer support, a recovery coach provides more comprehensive assistance beyond the 12-step framework.
  • What is the difference between a recovery coach and a therapist?
A simple way of looking at this question is that a recovery coach focuses on looking forward, whereas a therapist tends to help you process the past. Delving a little deeper into this, a recovery coach supports you in achieving and maintaining your sobriety and life goals by offering practical guidance and accountability. A therapist focuses on addressing psychological and emotional issues underlying addiction. Both are valuable and often, having both a recovery coach and therapist can provide a holistic approach to recovery.
  • When is the best time to work with a recovery coach?
Now! If you are committed to overcoming addiction and creating positive change in your life, it is time to start working with a recovery coach. Whether you're just starting your recovery journey or facing challenges later on, working with a recovery coach can offer valuable insights, tools, and strategies to help you stay on track and build a healthier life.
  • I am currently in treatment; when is a good time to start with a recovery coach?
Starting to work with a recovery coach while in treatment can be advantageous as it prepares you for life after treatment, creating a smoother transition. Taking this into consideration, I would suggest starting with a recovery coach at least 2 weeks before your exit date; this way, your coach can collaborate with your treatment team to ensure a cohesive approach to your recovery journey.
  • Do I still need a recovery coach if I have free aftercare?
While aftercare from a treatment centre is beneficial, a recovery coach offers personalised and bespoke, ongoing support beyond the initial detox and treatment. A recovery coach will help you implement skills and tools, navigate challenges, and stay focused on your goals. Having a recovery coach can significantly enhance your chances of sustaining and enjoying long-term recovery.
  • Do I still need to attend 12 Step/Fellowship meetings if I’m working with a recovery coach?
Yes, if that is the path you have chosen. Attending meetings can still be beneficial. While a recovery coach offers personalised support, 12-step meetings provide a sense of community and shared experiences. They complement each other nicely, fostering a comprehensive support network.
  • What constitutes successful recovery?
Good and rewarding recovery involves not only abstaining from substances but also rebuilding a balanced life physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. It's about finding purpose, healthy coping mechanisms, and forging positive relationships, but just like you, it is unique. A recovery coach can help you achieve these aspects of recovery in a way that resonates with your individual needs and requirements.
  • Can working with a recovery coach guarantee sobriety?
While a recovery coach significantly increases your chances of sobriety, they can't guarantee it. Sustainable recovery depends on many factors, most importantly, your motivation, commitment, and effort. Other factors that can also affect your success are your support system, environment, goals, openness to continued learning, and lifestyle. A recovery coach provides tools and support, but your active participation is what will make the real difference.
  • What happens if I relapse while I am working with a recovery coach?
If you have a recurrence (relapse), your recovery coach is there to help you regain your footing sooner rather than later. They'll support you in understanding the triggers that destabilised you and develop strategies to prevent future relapses. A relapse doesn't mean failure; it's a possible part of the journey, and your recovery coach will continue to guide you through it.
